Enotria is an ancient Roman-Greek name given to the area of southern Italy to which Enotrus, the youngest of the fifty sons of Lycaon, migrated before fifth century AD. Enotria means "land of grapevines."
We are a very small but dedicated family vineyard. We carefully nurture our vines so that we can produce the highest quality wine from the highest quality fruit. We have four grape varieties that we specialise in: pinot noir, pinot gris, cabernet franc and merlot....we are experimenting with pinot meuniere.
We have a long family tradition of wine-making, brought to Australia by some of our forebears from southern Italy. then continued by them and younger generations in the Barossa Valley of South Australia. All members of our family are involved in the vineyard, from the youngest who love whizzing around on a golf cart to collect the buckets of picked grapes, to the older family members who contribute to the maintenance of the vines, and the making and the selling of the wine. And the drinking of the wines!
Our vineyard is situated on a steep grade between 800 and 840 metres above sea level; because of the steep incline the vines are sheltered from both frosts and drying westerly winds. Being one of the highest growing areas in Australia, we have the perfect location for cool climate wines. At this height, budburst starts in September-October and fruit maturity is expected around April of the following year.
Our vines come mainly from clones of the Loire Valley in France. We have instituted sustainable viticulture practices, choosing organic methods wherever possible. Our vines are hand tended: hand picked and hand pruned, the fruit is picked at optimal ripeness, each bunch individually assessed and sorted. This ensures minimal damage to the vines and maximum wellness of the fruit. We aim for low yield to maximise quality. If the grapes do not pass our stringent quality tests, they never make it into the bottle! We do not use any animal products in the wine making process, so our wines are suitable for vegans.
We produce the finest quality cool climate wines in Australia. Our recent wines have won gold, silver and bronze medals and we anticipate more awards in the future. Our range consists of Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Cabernet Franc, Rose, and two Blanc de Noir (champagne style) wines. All wines are single variety, handpicked at optimum ripeness and tested for flavour at every stage of the winemaking process.
